Ceiling lights are they necessary?
So, you move into a new home and you inherit the previous occupants lighting or you have little money and so put up a white globe paper lantern which will do for the time being...
This is fine, much better than a bare light bulb but don’t let the months turn into years without changing that lantern! I'm a big fan of 'Love it or List It', 'Location Location Location' and many other television home shows but so often you see cheap lighting with little thought to the actual lights function and it really detracts from the aesthetics of a place.
Ceiling lighting is really important and just as much as the ambient lighting of table lamps and floor lamps. An overhead light will allow you to see the full room without any hidden dark corners, this is especially important if you want to do some cleaning (or if you’re lucky someone else does it for you!) and if it’s too bright, just install a dimmer. Think about the room’s decor; is it modern, trendy or rustic and traditional? There are so many options for lighting and not all of it costs a fortune, you can choose a ceiling light for under £25 and if you’re feeling brave have an electrician install a few in a cluster – what a great design feature that would be!
If you have a low ceiling you needn’t be worried about hitting your head, there are lots of products with a shallow depth that allow you to fix a pretty light without needing to constantly duck around it. Many are decorative to so you don’t have to be concerned about a utility light in your painstakingly sought glitzy living room or bedroom.
Buying a new home is a big investment and there are many financial commitments but choose wisely and a ceiling light will last you for many years or outlive your boredom of home make-over shows that’s for sure!
Spring Forward, Fall Back – The Changing of the Clock and How it Came to Be
For the lighting industry, this is the busiest time of the year when people realise their home is too dark and illumination is needed to lighten not just the home but also their mood.
When the clocks changed this weekend (remember the adage Spring forward, Fall back) we gained a lovely extra hour in bed. This ‘extra’ time however means we are gradually missing out on light evenings when we return from work – the winter time is now drawing in meaning we will have fewer daylight hours.
The idea of British Summer Time (or Daylight Saving Time as it is also known) was introduced by the Edwardian builder William Willett in 1907. A true lover of the outdoors he saw on early morning trips out that too many people had their curtains drawn against the sunlight and were wasting what daylight hours. It was from this belief that he campaigned for the clocks to be changed from what was at that time, Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), as it would be light by 3am and dark at 9pm midsummer.
Willett published a leaflet called 'The Waste of Daylight' in an attempt to get people out of bed earlier by changing the nation’s clocks. He argued that not only would this improve health and happiness but it would save the country £2.5 million.
For those who dislike winter and relish the clocks changing again, there is a wait ahead as they do not change until Sunday March 25th 2018. This is the official date the clocks wind forward and British Summer Time begins.
Bill Watterson, the famous American cartoonist, cited: “It's a cruel season that makes you get ready for bed while it's light out.”
We're all the same but different
Oh the irony, we're all busy trying to be different and yet we all want to have what someone else has. If you're a trend setter or a follower you will still want pleasure from the things you buy in life and so why not choose something a little different? A trend setter may spot the next upcoming thing but you could choose the slightly different and make it something extra ordinary.
Your space is your castle and your castle is your keep so opt for items that will set you apart from the crowds. Just because you're in a castle it doesn't mean you need a medieval light - choose Bare Bulb Pendants, Decanters, Buckets, Bottles or Asteroids! Yes, these are available to everyone and they are lighting but who would think to add them in groups or install coloured bulbs? A palace doesn't need a chandelier it requires individuality and FUN! Choose Curly Glass or a Cocoon - mix it up and make it YOUR space!
Imagine if we were all the same - what a boring world it would be!

Remember ceiling lighting is exciting! There are a huge range of ceiling lights available for the home and never before has there been so much choice of style, finish and material. Our range of ceiling lights can transform a dull, lifeless room into a vibrant space brimming with character and style. To choose the correct ceiling light for your chosen room we recommend you first decide whether you require a flush ceiling light or if the ceiling height can accommodate a drop fitting ceiling light.
Remember also the height of the people using the room can affect what fitting you choose! You may also want to consider the style of your room – is it contemporary or traditional? Are you happy to choose a more contemporary fitting if your room is traditional? There are no true design rules regarding lighting styles – you may well wish to mix and match a look to suit your personal taste and desires. Next, consider the finish – brass, satin nickel, chrome, glass, crystal, flock… The list is long but remember to consider your switch plates and door handles if you want a “uniformed” look.
Finally, decide if the ceiling fitting is going to be your only source of light (Lighting Styles would recommend using a selection of lighting, e.g. task, ambient, mood) in which case you will need to think about the wattage.
We are confident you will find something within this section to inspire and delight which will solve your lighting requirements.
