It's so unfair if you have a house which is a few bricks short of a tall ceiling as you're limited on what lights you can have. You may well want a fancy, glitzy chandelier but in reality you can't spend your time walking around it or struggling to see the television through it!
The best idea is to look for a semi-flush light that will have a short drop allowing you to still have something pretty yet the tallest person in the house will hopefully be able to avoid banging their head!
Not all flush and semi flush fittings are boring and staid. There are a number that are attractive and eye catching with crystals and chrome and many flush fittings when lit will add an interesting light pattern to the ceiling. Of course drum fittings are another alternative that may work in your space and these are modern for the contemporary home.
Whatever you decide to choose don't limit yourself to something unattractive, even the smallest room in the house should benefit from good lighting!
