Outdoor Lighting for Coastal Areas

Coastal areas can offer a unique challenge as they are subject to sea spray, salty air, high winds, and high rain levels, which can all limit your choice of outdoor lighting options Luckily, we have spent time collating a hand-picked selection of lighting options offering corrosion resistance through the use of materials such as copper and galvanized steel, along with an IP44 rating or higher. Our range is great for use near the sea, by estuaries, and lagoons etc.

We have many more products which are corrosion resistant, so if you can't see something you like here, please do contact us with your requirements and we will endeavour to find you a marine grade fitting.

Coastal Lighting - Ensuring Your Lights Stay Pristine

If your property is in a coastal location (within around 10 miles from the sea), your outdoor lighting will face an environment more hostile than homes further inland. One of the key factors is the additional problem of airborne salt. Salt gets whipped up in the waves and carried by the wind inland. This salt is corrosive to many materials, particularly metals. When salt remains in contact with steel, as it does when damp or wet, a chemical reaction occurs between the steel and the salt which results in the steel being corroded away. Therefore, any lighting constructed from steel which is either submerged in sea water or exposed to salty sea air will have a very limited life. While our selection of specialist coastal lighting, you can rest easy in the knowledge that your outdoor lighting is protected from the coastal elements.

If, however, you already own outdoor lights for your coastal property, you can help to preserve them and extend their life with careful maintenance. If they are galvanised, make sure the galvanising does not get damaged in any way. If they are painted, keep them regularly painted so that the paint remains intact. In all cases you need to ensure that all openings are kept sealed against the ingress of damp salty air. And brass connectors will last longer if you keep them coated with non-conducting grease.
