Architectural Up and Down Lights - Tips and Advice
While fantastically functional, architectural up and down wall washing lights also offer a fantastic opportunity to create a feature out of the lighting itself. Think the outside of your home is looking a little lacklustre in the evenings? Why not create a feature of Up and Down lights by placing them at equal distances along a wall and create a beautiful feature as you pull up each evening? Not only will you reap the benefits of being welcomed home by beautiful lights, but you're also investing in your own safety from your car to the door, and making life just that bit easier for finding your house keys.
Some tips for choosing up & down wall washing light fixtures
Up & down wall lights that are mounted directly to the wall can highlight elements that you may not want to see. If you have bumpy render or less-than-perfect brickwork these lights will show it up for all to see.
Hold a battery-operated torch against your wall to see how this looks on your property. If the high contrast is too much, consider using an up & down wall light that is mounted on a bracket. Even a centimetre or two can make a big difference.
GU10 bulbs are often sold with a medium beam angle of 36-40°. Narrow spot lamps and 60° flood lamps are also available to create different effects.
What colour white?
Warm white lamps look great against honey colured stone, brick and wood, but neutral or cool white lights can look just as good on white or grey render.
