Illuminated Christmas Candlesticks

Candles were used during ancient winter solstice celebrations as a a way of remembering that spring would soon come.  During the Christmas period the act of placing a burning candle in your home's window was a common tradition which dates back to colonial times. The display of a candle in a window makes your home inviting to friend's and families and like the fireplace where people huddle for comfort and peace.

These illuminated candelsticks are a way of adding that festive, peaceful feeling without the worry of a real candle catching your curtains alight! Great for siting in a window, on a dresser or a kitchen window.  These will add warmth and delight to the home for family and friends alike.

Christmas is a season rich in tradition. Everything associated with the period from the turkey to the tree has their place in Christmas history, even the Christmas candle has its own story. Candles are used for many occasions from birthdays, to weddings and more.  They create a desired atmosphere that sets the tone for the occasion.

Through the centuries, candles have been offered as gifts and used to ward off darkness. The first use of candles at Christmas was during the Roman festival of Saturnalia. Tall tapers of wax were given as gifts to guests and offered to Saturn as a symbol of his light.  The Pagans also used candles during Yule festivities. Candlelight and bonfires were used as symbols of the sun, and a farewell to the past seasons as well as a welcome to the beginning of a new cycle of seasons.

As Christianity spread, candles were placed in the front window to guide the Christ Child as he wandered from house to house on Christmas Eve. In some parts of Europe, this tradition still continues. In Sweden, St. Lucia is still celebrated with the youngest girl in the family wearing (or carrying) a crown of small lit tapers.
