As little as ten years ago this technology did not exist. Lighting designers would have given their right arm to light a space and offer their clients any shade of white light they wanted but this was only possibly achieved with filters and films. Changing the colour was a dream, today it can be delivered to your home with a flick of a switch or a prod on a touchscreen.
How does it work? Well, you don’t really need to know, but a plethora of routes have been taken and the most popular (especially in smaller LED fixtures) are 2 in 1 chip. Primarily inside the LED fixtures is a LED chip, inside that LED chip there will be at least two LED Emitting Diodes, one emits light high on the “white” spectrum and one low on the spectrum. Just like your television adjusting the power to the two diodes alters the light.
So that’s the basics, what varies is how the package comes, how it is controlled and what colours are offered.
Most of the products in this category have switches, some have a switch and Wi-Fi or Bluetooth capability. And one or two only can be altered by your smartphone.
