Traditional lampposts lanterns tend to provide diffuse lighting with a high downward light ratio. Most designs partially shield the lamp to avoid projecting light into the night sky or annoying neighbours. The style of post light chosen should reflect the architectural character of your home, your personal taste, the size of the area to be illuminated or a combination of these. Often traditional lampposts are used for their aesthetic appeal but they do provide excellent (and often glare free) illumination to your garden or exterior space.

Many of our traditional lampposts are hand finished with special paint effects to soften the look and make them more suited to period properties. Brass and copper components that are used in the post top lantern are not lacquered and will oxidise and take on a dated patina quickly to look like they have always been part of your garden.

Traditional garden lamp posts are more difficult to install than wall or pillar lighting and a good fixing is required to ensure your post is not vulnerable in high winds. Some tradition lamp posts are root burial meaning a section of the post is burried in the ground. Some have steel frames that need burial in the ground and some are fixed to a block of concrete poured on site. We do suggest you speak with a qualified electrician if you have any questions about wiring and switching your lampposts lighting in your garden. We always recommend that exterior and garden lighting is installed in accordance with the latest edition of the wiring regulations.

No traditional style post lights come with built in movement detectors. If you like one of our lamppost designs but need it to be operated by a movement detector you may benefit from using an independent PIR detector which can switch on garden lighting on the same circuit when the sensor is tripped. Often the sensors can be located in an inconspicuous location i.e. at the start of a pathway or drive allowing your light and many others to be switched on as soon as they may be necessary.
