Whenever possible you should introduce zones into you kitchen. It is always great to be able to switch off the main light and have supper under a soft glow of a pendant (especially if the washing up is piled high in the sink!). Any good electrician would be able to put in an additional switched circuit so you can divide up the lighting in your room.
