A commercial projector is really a larger and more powerful external spotlight. These use energy efficient discharge lamps with high lumen-per-watt ratios and long lamp life. These can be wall mounted (directed up or down), ceiling mounted (shining down or diagonally), or fixed at low level (shining up or across). While these projectors have a IP rating that makes them suitable for external use they are often used inside where their rugged design suits the exposed elements of a building.
These exterior spotlights all have rotational symmetry - this gives a circle of light. When looking for uniform lighting of a long and wide object the positioning and spacing of the fixtures needs careful planning. The high IP rating makes them suitable for exterior use and for applications in buildings where dust is a problem.
