The heavy ball at the bottom of a Dutch ball chandeliers was used to keep the fitting level when candles were originally used.
A heavy ball at the bottom of the chandelier lowered the centre of gravity and reduced tipping if candles burnt faster on one side due to draughts. The heavy ball would also have reduced swinging in the wind.
