Would it be OK to shield of the light at the top of the fitting so it only shines downward? There would be no overheating issues if the top of this light fixture is blanked off. A aluminium take away container would make a good reflector and increase the downward light too.

How does it turn on/ off? This fixture does not have a pullcord or switch. You will need to hard-wire to a switched lighting circuit to operate.

Does the light from these fittings go up and down or just down? From the photograph it looks like the light washes up the wall above the fitting as well as down the mirror This is a up and down light, so the light would shine up and down.
