More information on

illuminated bathroom mirrors

This page shows a wide range of illuminated bathroom mirrors and gives a general guide to picking the mirror that's right for your bathroom (or dressing room). When browsing the Illuminated Bathroom Mirrors category simply click on the image or text to see more details. All the mirrors on these pages are supplied complete with lights built in or included for self assembly. All the relevant switching, transformers (for low voltage lamp) and control gear (for fluorescent lamps), and wall fixings are included.

How do illuminated bathroom mirrors work?
To make an illuminated mirror a piece of mirrored glass is sandblasted from the rear to remove the silvering which allows light from the lamps (situated behind the glass) to shine through the frosted glass. The front of the mirror retains a smooth finish making cleaning easier.

How do mirrors magnify?
All mirrors on this page are made from flat glass meaning they are not magnified. For a mirror to provide magnification the glass needs to be pressed or heat treated to make the glass concave. Lighting Styles does offer illuminated bathroom mirrors that are magnified – see our illuminated shaving mirror page for more details.

What lamp type should I use?
When buying an illuminated mirror you should ask whether it is more important to obtain good colour rendering for skin tones or to have a mirror with a longer lamp life that is energy efficient. This choice has to be offset against the size, shape and style of mirror that suits your décor. There are two lamp types used in our range of illuminated bathroom mirrors: (1) Tungsten Halogen or (2) fluorescent

(1) Illuminated Mirrors with Tungsten halogen lamps
These lamps have a tungsten filament in a glass capsule filled with halogen gas. The lamp has a high colour rendering capacity. This makes colours look very similar to those when viewed in daylight because the lamp generates light throughout the spectrum rather like the sun. It should be noted that the colour temperature of the halogen lamp is warmer than daylight but this simply means your skins warm tones are enhanced. G4 tungsten halogen lamps have a lamp life of approximately 2000 hours.

One major advantage of using an illuminated mirror with tungsten halogen lamps is the heat from the lamps warms the glass which evaporates any condensation on the mirror giving a fog-free bathroom mirror.

(2) Illuminated Mirrors with fluorescent lamps
Old magnetic ballasts and poor quality starter have given fluorescent lighting a bad name over the years but things are now changing for the better. Electronic high frequency ballasts provide a light without the flicker and strobe effect associated with old fluorescent lighting. Gone too is the pop, pop when the lights are switched on. These changes on control gear combined with a movement by the lighting industry towards providing fluorescent lamps with a higher colour rendering make the use of fluorescent backlit illuminated mirrors quite acceptable for use in the home and the low energy and long lamp life make these essential in hotels. Fluorescent lamps will give good service for 10,000 hours and last longer but give increasing poor light after this time. So replace the lamps after 10,000 hours and do not wait for them to fail.

Do I need a demister pad or illuminated mirror with a demister fitted?
If you have a bathroom that is well ventilated and you choose an illuminated mirror with tungsten halogen lamps we do not believe it is necessary as the heat from the lamps will demist the mirror quite quickly. If however your existing bathroom mirror steams up and is unusable for 10 minutes after a shower you should consider either using a mirror with tungsten halogen lamps and switching this on before you shower or use a mirror with fluorescent lamps and fit a demister pad behind the glass – there is nothing worse than spending good money on refurbishing your bathroom and still not being able to see yourself in the mirror!

Many of these mirrors have shaver sockets and while the control gear for the lighting and lamps is electronic, silent and flicker free the shaver point is protected by a safety isolator which may be heard to buzz or hum during normal use. This noise or interference comes the the windings within the isolating transformer which are used to isolate the 1 amp supplied at the shaver socket from the higher current on the supply. If customers find the noise a nuisance they can re-route the supply from the terminal block to the switched side of the pull cord - hence the shaver socket will only operate when the lights are switched on. This work should be carried out by a qualified electrician. We do not endorse the removal of the safety isolator - it is there for your protection.
